The front garden, backyard garden and associated garden shed are traditional features of Melbourne’s domestic architecture, although the recent proliferation of high rise apartment dwellings means, sadly, that our city and suburbs are less verdant than they once were. Nevertheless, the history of art is redolent with examples of the importance of gardens as places for inspiration and as subject matter for art itself - Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh for instance.
This project is based on the idea that the front garden provides a convergence between public and private space and offers the street its ‘face’ while the backyard garden is a private space shared with family and friends and the garden shed is a storage space whose interior remains hidden from general view. This exhibition is the 5th in the on-going Room project together with Wilma Tabacco, Liliana Barbieri, Susan Knight and Trevor Mein. My work consisted of both two and three-dimensional pieces exploring my relationship with the garden.
